It all started with the Commandos series. Having a bunch of characters performing different actions on a map filled with bad guys and other obstacles quickly became an instant hit gameplay type. Soon, other games inspired from Commandos saw the light of the day. Desperados, a Wild West adventure, Chicago 1930, a mob game, and Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood. Out of these three, only Desperados got a sequel, so here today we’re looking at Desperados 2: Cooper’s Revenge, a full 3D game which merges isometric and third-person perspective into a new adventure by Cooper and his gang.
I’ll start by pointing out a major flaw in all these games. There is no replay value. Yes, Commandos had some sort of multiplayer, but I’m considering its three step brothers mentioned above. Once you get to the end of the game, you just throw it in your old games library and that’s it. The only satisfaction you get is by playing the single-player and for the money you paid, it’s got to be top notch. Yes, I played all these three titles and from what I remember the difficulty setting of the levels increased step by step, until you really needed to carefully plan each and every move you made. With Desperados 2, I am a little puzzled. This game is hard. The normal mode is hard, so I can’t imagine how hard the hard mode can be. It’s not that you have pretty big levels, though it’s that too. The places they’ve chosen for the patrols and their view cone by night, which by the way is the same as their view cone by day, rendered some levels almost unplayable. Consider the fact that you now have to move silently because they can also hear you and you already have two major problems with this game.
