Today I just set a new personal record. I managed to finish a game in 20 minutes. Not an arcade or puzzle game mind you, but a more “serious” title. And when I say serious I mean a game with a not so modest production budget, distributed by a pretty renowned publisher. On the other hand, House of the Dead III is not a complex game, like Max Payne 2 or Unreal 2, but a simple arcade first person shooter, which relies heavily on the eye sight of the player and his mouse’s’ ability to sustain a lot of clicks.

The story is also very simple, being nothing more than a pretext for blowing the countless zombies in the game to bits. The action takes place some 20 years after the events in House of the Dead 2, with Agent G and Lisa Rogan searching for Lisa’s father, Thomas, who went missing while searching a zombie infested building with his partner. There are also no plot twists to speak of and even if you haven’t played the other two titles in the series, if you pay attention to the flashbacks that limit the game’s chapters you will quickly realize that the ending is as dull as it can get. There are six chapters in all, which can be completed in a different order, due to the fact that some of them are comprised of two or three levels that can’t be completed in order. At first glance, this represents a plus for the replay value, because each level has its own locations and monsters. But after two or three hours you will know the game inside out, despite the various difficulty levels, which only increases the number of zombies you encounter and also makes them stronger against your shotgun.
