Silent Storm: Sentinels is part of a genre which counts very few titles over the course of computer gaming history, but these few ones include the X-COM and Jagged Alliance series. This genre cannot be labeled easily, but if I would give it a try I think it would be Turn Based Squad Tactics Role Playing Game. It is hard to understand what exactly makes these games gather so large and longstanding communities around them, and the recipe of success consists of a rather large list of ingredients, each one having a more or less important impact on the final product. If one thing is for certain, one cannot judge these titles simply by reducing them to graphics, sound, gameplay, or any other abstract aspect for that matter. To fully appreciate them, you have to look at the concepts, such as the open playing path, the characters that you can bond with, if they have a well defined personality, a credible plot, and the feeling that you are really influencing the world of the game by your actions and decisions.
The story of Silent Storm: Sentinels takes place right after the ending of World War II, starting, of course, where Silent Storm left of. Sadly it seems that Nival Interactive has learned little from the disaster that the story from Silent Storm was. After choosing a predefined character or creating a custom one (which can be personalized quite a lot in terms of looks), you get shoved right into the battle. No intro movie and no explanation whatsoever of who you are or what you’re doing here. And the sad part is that you have little chance of learning anything about these during the course of the game if you haven't played Silent Storm. All you are told is that Hammer (a fictional Nazi secret organization during WW II, which represented the bad guys who tried to destroy the world in Silent Storm and which you wouldn't know if you haven't played Silent Storm), is not as destroyed as you have thought. But now that the war is over, an allied secret organization, called Sentinels, has been formed to fight it. Of course you will be asked to join this organization, and since you really have no other choice you will have to save the world yet again. Unfortunately, the game's ending doesn't truly reward us for our efforts in finishing the game. Also, later on in the game some huge robot-like armor called Panzerklein make their entry in the story. So much for a credible plot and enjoyable storyline.
