Back in the old gaming, computer games were very easy to catalogue. Wolfenstein was a FPS, Dune 2, Command & Conquer and Warcraft were RTS, the Heroes of Might and Magic was synonym with fantasy turn based games and so on. However, with the astounding development of the game industry and constant release of games, the mechanics of a specific game genre can no longer by improved to the point were a player won’t consider the game X similar or even a clone of game Y. Evidently, the only solution for the game developers to get out of this evolutionary dead-end was to start and combine different genres in their games, creating a more diverse and entertaining gameplay. Not surprisingly, these hybrids sometimes were very appreciated by the gaming community and now, the guys from Phenomic are trying they’re chance by releasing Spellforce, a fantasy RTS/RPG game which promises to provide us with an amazing gaming experience.

The storyline of Spellforce might bore you at first, but once you get the hang of things, you will want to finish the singleplayer campaign. The basic idea is very simple: in the magical land of Fiara, 13 circle mages, blinded by their greed and lust for power, attempted to control the very fabric of the Universe. Using magical runes to summon vast armies, they plunged the world into chaos, in what was to be called the Convocation Wars, and ultimately shattered the world, breaking it up into small islands, connected by magical portals. The player takes control of a rune warrior, summoned at the start of the game by Rohen, one of the last two Circle Mages, and given the task to prevent another terrible war that could lead to the destruction of the world (or rather what’s left of it).
