Released in 1999, Deus Ex took the gaming world by storm, gathering some 32 “Game of the Year” awards from the press and winning critical acclaim from the gaming community. Some say the backbone of its success was the excellent storyline and the way it unfolded during the game. Others that it managed to be the perfect blend between the FPS and RPG genres and offering the player the opportunity to resolve the in-game situations as they saw fit. The truth is that whatever made Deus Ex a hit is still a mystery …otherwise, there would have been only A+ games released by now. In addition, despite the fact that it did not score quite well on the sales charts, Eidos and Ion Storm Austin (ISA) considered that a sequel was necessary and that it would be a lot more successful than its predecessor was.
Although the fans were worried regarding the gameplay changes ISA made to the sequel’s gameplay, Eidos continued to reassure them that is was all for the best and the importance of these changes would be clear when the game would ship. To sweeten the waiting of the fans however, Eidos decided to launch a demo version of the game, to allow them to accommodate themselves with the new changes. But no one could have foreseen the disaster that would soon follow. Forums full of unhappy fans, criticizing the over simplification of the game, poor performance, weird interface, lack of area based damage, mouse lag and more, everything culminating with the creation of a petition in which the fans begged Eidos to postpone the game and correct all these flaws. However, Eidos did not think so, as they announced that the 3 December release date would be respected, since the game was already gold. This announcement surprised me, having the Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness fiasco fresh in my memory. However, since hope dies last (but it still dies), I patiently waited for the release date, to see if the final game was so much different from the demo.
As you can imagine, things did not change a lot, and I must confess that for me, Invisible War (IW) is the Disappointment of the Year. Many will ask: “Wow, does the game suck this badly?” No, don’t get me wrong, the game doesn’t suck, it’s just that it fails to live up to the fans expectations, with many of the producers original promises being nowhere to be found.
