I have often wondered why we have so many World War II games around, and why so many more are still in production. I believe that part of the answer lies in the arsenal that was available to all parties involved. The Great War was a dirty and stinky trench business and nowadays the very flammable terrorists are quite hard to find, but WW2 was as balanced as any war could be.
The German Schmeisser was all but similar to the American Thompson, while the Messerschmitt flied without shame alongside the British Spitfire. Surely the T-34 was a menace for the German tanks until the Panther arrived, but it’s this very technological race that enflamed the imagination of all players,…

Six years ago I had a unique experience. After a few adventures in Gothic 1 I had already caught the Gothic fever, but the high point of this state of euphoria was only truly reached once I played Gothic 2. In its company I remained without words, a game in which the Piranha Bytes designers invested all their talent and created a fascinating fantasy world. There were bugs, but even so, a lot of RPG fans ignored the shortcomings, being swept by the story, gameplay and atmosphere.
Then along came Gothic 3, created with the same attention for details, but which suffered from the symptoms of a rushed release. Currently, after installing the Community Patch 1.73, I can say that…

No matter how great our demands are, we have to admit that this year, the producers were very generous with the adventure enthusiasts. We had Ceville, Sherlock Holmes Vs. Jack the Ripper, Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis, but the most important titles were without doubt Tales of Monkey Island and Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.
All of them are good games, but I felt that they lacked some truly innovative ideas. It’s true that it’s not easy to overcome the standards set by great series, but occasionally we have the oportunity to experience a less conventional title, which breaks the barriers of what’s considered “normal” and brings a breath of fresh air regarding originality.

The symbol of castaways in the belly of a giant beast is one to be found in various works throughout history: starting out with the Bible (Jonah), going through 19th european literature (Pinocchio) or surreal japanese animations (Mind Game). It’s a symbol of atonement, meditation and, as father Gregorian would say, integration into the absolute. There, in the obscurity of digestive organs belonging to a creature the size of China, you repent and it’s said you can even find God and pals.
To Guybrush Threepwood, this is nothing else than an opportunity to get his mitts on a mystical spunge with which to save the world and maybe talk to a giant sea cow. That’s just the way he was…

The American Mein Kampf
Although modern shooters are violent, they also like to display excessive seriousness and hide behind a world teeming with realism, war and bloodshed. A solid shooter doesn’t have to explain itself, because it represents the roughest sides of reality. And a realistic shooter is always right, because it determines us to confront our violent nature. Moreover, modern shooters are safe, both for the developers and the consumers themselves, because they offer exactly what’s on demand: a lot of useless… shooting.
It is then of no surprise that the exotic nature and vivacity of shooters fade away under a thick layer of military simulation. Cheesy stories, such as the one in the good ol’ No One Lives…

The Latin expression “Memento mori” stipulates that people are mortals and that all of us are going to meet our end sooner or later. Legend says that the Romans used it to tell victorious generals that they are not infallible and later it defined the works of art which underlined the ephemeral human existence.
If it’s properly used, the combination of art, mysteries and an adventure game can’t fail. And the adventure Memento Mori, although it seems inspired from a novel signed by Dan Brown, it’s far from being just a simple copy. But it does have the same tendency to place enigmas in an artistic-religious environment full of conspiracies.

If you’re an FPS fan, you’ve most certainly come across the so-called “spawn camping” in one of the many battles you’ve fought online. You know, when the enemy bunkers down in your base (or somewhere close enough) and blows your head off as soon as you arrive on the map. And regardless of how many excuses you can come up with for it, spawn camping isn’t exactly the most glorious job a gamer can have, so various producers have come up with different solutions.
Some games allow you to respawn next to an ally, with the obvious advantage of spawning somewhere else if you’re being hunted in your own base. The problem is that if you’re ally is a moron,…

If so, then Dungeon Keeper surely indulged you when it was released, a long time ago. Or how about playing the old king who wishes to rescue his captive daughter? One of the most dangerous things that can happen to a gamer, especially one who also works as a game editor, is to forget why he’s playing in the first place. As times go by and we check more and more titles on our “Completed” list, we slowly start to mock the so-called “kiddie games” or those that don’t seem to rise to our high standard of pretentiousness, as it were.

We get so caught up in this mad race to have the most epic gear on the server, the most frags in a Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer match or to cross the line first in Need for Speed that we forget the simple fact that a…

When it comes to series or episodic games, there’s a slight problem when you turn in a review. Because of the general compulsive obsession towards grading, friends often ask me when seeing a fat grade „So enlighten us, if the next game in the series is better and so on and so forth, what grades will you grant if you gave this episode a 90?”.

Well, if the Tales of Monkey Island series keeps this crescendo up, I really won’t care about snobbish remarks and the frowns on my buddies’ faces, because I’ll be too busy prancing around fake plastic palm trees with a bathrobe and a pirate hate, whistling the theme song. It’s hard to say what exactly is stirred within you when you’re watching a Western. Because you either like the genre, or you don’t. The best example would be a recent movie, “Appaloosa”, that I consider to be a high-quality western. Unfortunately, the critics weren’t as impressed because it didn’t have enough action and… deaths. It’s true that gun fights on horseback, gap-toothed Mexican thugs and epic duels are specific and necessary, but I don’t believe that only these elements define this movie genre. Probably because… hey, wait a minute… we’ve been through this before, while we were talking about the simple, yet delicious platformer Bionic Commando Rearmed. That’s when you found out that the hero of the series is a pretty hot hippie who belongs to that retro era in which gamers actually built statues to better worship platformers.
The same studios that at first brought Nathan Rad Spencer back to life through the re-incarnated pseudo-3D version of the old platformer, have now thought that maybe Captain Spencer, the ancestor of machos, actually deserves a fully-fledged title. I bring forth a critical sense and warn whoever is willing to listen that there are pirates out there, who will leave you hanging for 2 mobs, a spear and some pink socks. Evil is watching, waiting, hunting, it’s what it does. And there are those cannibals who have a taste for missionaries like myself and are not swayed by the words of a “carebear”.
Overlord 2 is a clear case of false expectations. It is a sequel after all, so I was expecting something worthy enough to justify the name, and make a clear distinction between a follow-up and an expansion pack. I did have some ideas about how it should have been, but almost none of those ideas came to fruition in the sequel. It’s basically the same game, with a couple of added extra features. Still, it’s just as funny as the first one was, and it still has that „x factor” keeping you glued in front of the screen. The above decent console port job helped matters too.
As you can see, there isn’t much of an intro for this article.…

When it was released in 2001, Red Faction stood out from the FPS crowd thanks to its impressive terrain deforming possibilities. Basically, you could blow anything up following the motto “If there’s no door, we’ll just make one”. And although in 2003 a sequel was released (I’m talking about the PC versions here), it took more than six years for the franchise to jump on next-gen console, time during which Volition studios developed a new engine, originally named Geo-Mod 2. Also, the perspective shifted from first to third person, “to better admire the destruction”, as the producers themselves stated.
