The number of Free-to-Play MMOs that have invaded the market in the past year was so high that even to me, your regular MMO enthusiast with an obsessive compulsion to evaluate ALL of them, keeping up became a real problem. Indeed, only a small number of them deserves constant attention, like 9Dragons, Dofus, BOTS, Dreamlords and a few others, but how can you decide which one of them has potential without testing them?! Of course, I could use the Internet as a trusty source by taking into account the general level of interest concerning the respective title.
Unfortunately, this would mean to trust the result of some marketing tactics that are meant to manipulate you in most cases, by blotting…

With Wrath of the Lich King knocking on our gates, a lot of current World of Warcraft subscribers set aside activities such as raiding, focusing rather either on gathering gold, or exploring the recently opened Public Test Realm, which offers those unfortunate enough not to get a Beta Key a shy look at the new expansion.
As expected for such a title, ever since it was announced there was a flurry of previews, hands-on columns, as well as new talent theorycrafting and childish threads that popped out everywhere. I personally tried to dodge the hype and other people’s opinions, so don’t worry – there are no naive assumptions such as „The new class, Death Knight, is going to be overpowered”.…

Even though both versions of Mass Effect (PC & Xbox 360) were well received, many old-school RPG fans that grew up with Fallout, Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale or Planescape Torment considered that BioWare Studios had become too console oriented and won’t make another title that will live up to the games from the RPG golden age. But as if to prove them wrong, BioWare revealed at GC 2008 and E3 the first solid information regarding Dragon Age, a title that was left for dead and even became a subject of mockery since its early announcement in 2004. All that was known was that the Dungeons & Dragons license would be dropped in favor of a new universe (a dark heroic…

The faster, the better. No, you won’t be able to carry around dozens of weapons and you won’t save the Earth from hordes of invading aliens. You just have to get from point A to point B without being caught by the police. A-HA! Police! I knew it, there will be killing!
Less than a year after the launch of The Burning Crusade, Blizzard announced that they are working on a new expansion for World of Warcraft, called Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK). For the fans of the Warcraft series, the name is quite clear regarding this new chapter: it’s about the continent called Northrend and the famous prince Arthas, who, with a little help from the evil orc shaman Ner’zhul, became the powerful Lich King.
The expansion will do exactly what a very large part of the community hoped it won’t do, and that’s to offer a new continent, Northrend, approximately as big as Outlands, and a raised character level cap, to 80. Does this sound familiar? It…

But whatever I play, I choose games which are as different from reality as possible – the exact opposite is always preferred. That’s because I believe a game is an escape from the mundane, from every day’s boring passage, from the wonderful office performance and that’s why I usually stay as far as I can from simulators – I’ve got too much realism in my own back yard, thank you.
I have always wondered where the beginning was in an MMO game and naturally, where it ended. Of course, you can always say that everything begins with level 1 and a start-up location where you squash a few bugs before heading out, into the wilderness. What’s funny about it is that every once in a while, each MMO gets an update, an add-on, an expansion or something like that, which adds new gameplay possibilities to help you kill some more time and further fuel your addiction. It looks like it’s all a never-ending story and I could be fine with that, if I hadn’t a real life to go back to each morning.

I’ve never been more puzzled in my life. I swear I’ve just played El Matador but it felt like Max Payne visiting some old friends down at the tropics. It’s unbelievable. The way he walks, moves, jumps, the slow motion, all these things seem pasted directly from Max Payne. OK, let’s put a stop to it and start with the beginning. El Matador is a new third person shooter from Plastic Reality and Cenega. I had the opportunity to play a preview version of the game and since the game’s release is coming soon, I thought I could share with you some of my thoughts.

To be honest, I never knew what Juarez was, until I searched with Google. I've been hearing the name, but I forgot what it means. I found out that Juarez is a location in Mexico. Back in the old days it was called Paso del Norte or the Northern Pass, because that’s where a river, Rio Grande, is passing through the mountains. This region’s history is long and dramatic, but I’ll make it short and say that Call of Juarez throws you in one of the toughest periods of time ever, the Wild West.

I have to confess that I’m sick of fantasy MMORPGs. I’m serious. I’m tired of dwarves, dragons, goblins, elves and the likes. Sure, this particular game universe does have its appeal, but there have been so many fantasy games released so far that I’ve reached a saturation point. Maybe that’s why I wasn’t hooked by World of Warcraft, but that’s another story. That said, I’m always excited when a game studio announces an online game that’s different from the classic fantasy recipe. Korean publisher NCSoft has made a habit of releasing games that break the classic rules and so far, their policy seems to pay off in a big way. First, there was City of Heroes, so far the only…

The huge popularity of Guild Wars wasn’t backed up just by the one million copies sold worldwide by September 2005, but by the great reviews and favorable player opinions as well. The success of the game wasn’t attributed to the lack of a monthly fee as to its complexity and PvP (Player vs Player) replay value. More than nine months after its launch, we can safely say that Guild Wars has reached its maturity, since now builds are no longer being invented, they are being perfected. As a result, unlike the first few weeks after the game’s launch, winning a match heavily depends on the skill of the players, rather than the skills they use. That’s because, despite its 6…

Despite having made Archangel and Robo Rumble, Metropolis Software are best known for their Gorky series of games, which started out in 1999 with Gorky 17, a game which was released in the US under the name of Odium. Five years later, a prequel was released, Gorky Zero, which also starred Cole Sullivan as the main hero. Former member of NATO troops, we will also see him in Aurora Watching. His job this time will be to investigate the activities of a certain doctor Jacek Parecki, who apparently has started some very dangerous experiments in the arctic.

No one expected Valve to show such a game at E3, especially as they've been tight-lipped about it the whole time. Only the news that 30th of September was the expected to be the release date managed to transform any Half-Life and Counter-Strike fan into an uncontrollable zombie. A few months later disaster strikes and Valve's network is compromised. Because of this, the source code and an unfinished version of the game roamed freely on the net for some time. So big was the impact of this test which lasted four days, that a few hours before its finish the fan-site forums were full of requests to prolong it at least until Sunday night, 16th of May.
Of course, this enthusiasm could be based on the fact that everyone could play without completing the usual beta-test forms (basically it was what we call a beta-test but with an alpha version). Another reason is the extraordinary graphics…

After the start of the closed multiplayer beta testing, Ubisoft released as promised the single-player demo for Far Cry, a 3D Shooter which made quite a stir at last year’s E3, and which will most likely compete with the likes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Doom 3 or Half-Life 2 for the title of “Best First Person Shooter of the Year”. The first impression after we played the demo was a good one, despite the fact that it was very poorly optimized. Fortunately, sometime after the demo release, Ubisoft Romania surprised us by sending a preview build of Far Cry, which featured five full levels, including the one from the demo. Very few have heard of Pro Evolution Soccer on the Playstation. That’s not really surprising considering the game consoles market is not very evolved over here. So, for those that haven’t heard about this game, let me tell you that it is considered the best soccer game on the Playstation. It’s biggest contender, Winning Eleven is also produced by Konami. The Playstation version of PES 3 cannot compare to FIFA in terms of official licenses, however, that’s the only thing FIFA has over it.

Truth is, each decides for himself but in case you want to teach a kid a few things about computers, a game is a great start. The first problem now is what kind of game is suitable for him.
